Fishing Report – August Charter Fishing Near Sanibel Island & Captiva

August has given us some awesome charter fishing opportunities this year. We have had a lot of rain, and the freshwater releases from Lake Okeechobee have pushed a lot of fish further north into Pine Island Sound. I have been getting a lot of calls asking if the fishing is still good- it’s great if you know where to go! We are seeing a lot of bait schools around Sanibel Island, Captiva and up into Pine Island Sound.

Redfish, Trout & Snook Charter Fishing

Redfish are beginning to school up already and we are starting to see some bigger trout move onto the flats. We are mostly throwing bait right now for the redfish, although we do have a decent artificial bite. Once the water cools down a bit, we should have an awesome artificial bite for reds. Snook can be found anywhere there is bait, with the greatest numbers being on the beaches and in the passes.

Tarpon Fishing

We have had good tarpon fishing, although we couldn’t find many fish this past week due to strong winds. I expect we will continue to have good tarpon fishing through September, if the weather cooperates. Late season tarpon are a lot of fun to fish for, they are in shallow water and they are generally more aggressive than spring tarpon. Tarpon are the ultimate inshore sport fish averaging 60 to 150lbs. They are real fighters and out fishing charter clients love reeling them in.
